Benefits of vertical gardening of the balcony

In summer balconies turn into a veritable platform for relaxation. Many potted plants come here and with minimum effort and care a complete potted garden can be planted on even the smallest balcony. Enclosed and heated, open, large and miniature, balconies can become a beautiful blooming oasis in summer. Surrounded by colorful flowering plants it is so pleasant to enjoy a morning coffee, a cool cocktail, an evening breeze or a conversation in the sunset rays.

Even putting simple summer plants in pots or a few balcony boxes can make a balcony space elegant. But perhaps nothing compares in effectiveness and beauty with blooming walls. This method of vertical landscaping of the balcony creates a feeling of a solid wall of plants. And the flowering wall doesn't have to be a wall at all. A flowering wall can be created on an end, a partition or part of a balcony, used as a screen or a protection against the bright summer sun.

Environmental, creating not only a pleasant atmosphere but also a pleasant microclimate on the balcony, saving from excessive heat and purifying the air, vertical walls recreate the comfort of a flowering garden on a small space on the balcony. And the best approach to their creation is when the landscaping and gardening techniques are inspired and feel the satisfaction of the work.

The drafting of the sketch, definition of the landscaping area, the initial conditions and the selection of plants for them to implement the idea - these are all steps that need to be taken at the planning stage.

Grasses for vertical balcony gardening

You can use indoor plants for vertical balcony gardening such as the ones which like fresh air and are not afraid of draughts and are happy to climb over to the gardens and balconies in the summer. But the bulk of the plants should be annual stars - crops that have abundant and long blooming and can create in the design color spots and ornate accents. Lianas or bushy plants allow you to freely shape crops and achieve their maximum decorativeness without the need to save plants for the next year and to strictly adhere to the rules of their cultivation.

Three main factors should determine the choice of plants:

  • your own preferences as to shape, color, details of blossom and leaf structure;
  • condition where the plant is to grow (orientation of balcony towards the sun or shady side);
  • the possibility for care for capricious plants or the preference for hardy species.

When creating vertical gardens and balcony wall landscaping you can either create neutral background compositions or try to plant plants so as to get a lushly blooming and bright canopy. The color scheme can be changed and selected according to your taste by combining flowering and decorative deciduous plants so as to achieve the maximum effect.

Harmonious pastel colors, bright monochrome compositions or contrasts between the main garden colors - options for balcony design only you can choose. The main thing to remember is that the plants should complement and emphasize the beauty of each other, contrast the leaves and shape of flowers, keeping their individuality.

Propagation plants for growing summer plants or colorful lianas can be grown by yourself or buy ready-made, already blooming, healthy seedlings. With the latter option, it is better to choose plants in containers, carefully assessing the condition of the leaves for traces of pests and consequences of improper maintenance.

Main ways of organizing vertical balcony gardening

In vertical balcony gardening today uses three ways of decoration:

  1. Creating a vertical canopy, screen or screen of lianas.
  2. Creating a vertical potted garden - placing on a stand or directly on the wall with the help of fasteners a series of potted and ampelic plants.
  3. Creating flowering walls by hydroponics methods or growing on a fur wall.

Each of the balcony design options has its advantages and drawbacks. If you like to masters and experiments, you can allocate a bigger budget, you can afford a hydroponic wall. If you need the least labor-intensive and complex option, then it is worth to stop at vines. And if you like Italian, Scandinavian and Spanish motifs, you can think about colorful potted gardens on the wall.

Classic vertical gardening with lianas

A simple stretched net of wire, twine or fixed trellis of different materials (metal, wood, plastic), boxes for growing summer plants with installed grids - the most traditional way to create verticals on the balcony. Green and flowering screens on such a support will create a continuous screen, you can fully use the possibility of gardening without losing valuable space.

Creation of such a flowering wall is reduced to laying drainage, filling the container substrate and planting plants, shoots which will need to direct and tie up.

For the southern and partly southern balconies the choice of annual vines is particularly rich. Here you can use and modest in character, but dazzling in color nasturtium, and exotic cobia, and airy azarina, and romantic pea fragrant, and inimitable black-eyed tunbergia winged or fashionable today quamoclite.

If you like the original fruit, you can think about decorative pumpkins. As a container plant you can also grow clematis or climbing roses, but in this case you will have to take care of the proper overwintering of lianas.

Lianas for shady balconies - a great rarity. Ivy and grapevine are usually used for this purpose, which are taken out into the fresh air for the summer. But sweet peas also grow well on a northern balcony, especially if they receive proper care. Another liana that demonstrates amazing unpretentiousness is the hippo, whose bright gramophones and no less bright greens look more exquisite on the balcony than in the gardens.

Vertical potted garden

Hooking up the wall of the balcony with fixtures for flower pots, using multi-tiered stands, different variations of hanging multi-tiered shelves, you can create a blooming wall of dozens of pots on the balcony wall.

There is a great choice of "add-on" structures today. Narrow shelves, ladders, shelves, racks, which are often a work of art with forged elements, old stepladders or shelf racks will help to place plants no worse than "hooks" and brackets with circles-holders for pots, and other hinged holders of different sizes and shapes. You can place a series of plants not in containers, but in bags of sailcloth or thick cloth, in improvised containers (such as old tins or an old set).

Of course, the possibility of placing a large number of planters on the wall is strictly practical limitations - from the possibility of using reliable fasteners to the stability of materials and the ability to drill holes. Addition shelves simplify the process, but for them and need to provide a reliable fixing that does not allow the structure to tip over.

Hanging on the wall a dozen pots will not allow every balcony. For this option of vertical gardening choose necessarily small, lightweight containers and very light substrate and drainage to reduce the maximum load on the structure.

Selecting plants for a vertical potted garden

Petunias, pansies and marigolds are the undoubted favorites for balcony decoration. But with vertical gardening it is worth taking into account the form of growth of plants. Ampelic plants with hanging shoots that can create beautiful cascades are the best choice. Today there are even such varieties of marigolds, pelargoniums, balsamines, as well as begonias.

To achieve a particularly bright effect, it is worth combining ampelous plants in complex combinations with bushy, which will give the flowering wall of different pots additional volume.

For walls made up of several under one another suspended balcony boxes, placed in a staggered order of pots with summers, or located on a narrow rack potting garden - the choice of cultures is based on lighting conditions:

  • On the eastern and western balconies charming vertical garden can be created from pelargonium, balsam, begonia, petunias, lobelia, browallia, bacopa, diascia. Any indoor plants that can be taken outdoors in summer will feel good here.
  • The heather and ericas, cataranthus, gerberas, ampel violets, marguerites, nasturtium, levkoy, ageratum, carnations, phlox, the same pelargonium and petunias of hardy small flower varieties are more appropriate on the southern balconies. Even ampelous varieties of strawberries can perform a spectacular vertical task. From house plants here you can take out and use in a vertical garden on a rack or stand cacti, dracenas, yuccas, agave, laurel, citrus, aloe.
  • On the cooler north side of the house on the balcony for a vertical potted garden it is better to choose shade-loving house plants - ferns, fuchsias, trudescantias, ivy, laurel, aspidistra, cissus. But the choice is not limited to them alone. On the northern balcony will grow forget-me-nots and reseda, begonias and velvets, balsamines and coleus.

If you decide to decorate an open balcony with a vertical potted garden that has no protection from the wind, special attention should be paid to the stability of structures. But also the annuals also need to choose more carefully. Calendulas, ageratums, begonias, verbena, annual asters, chrysanthemums, gazania grow well on windy balconies.

For such a prefabricated potted garden, placed not in the horizontal, but in the vertical plane, kept its attractiveness throughout the year, you must not forget to introduce to the main annuals and potted accents. Bulbs and small bulbs, such as crocuses, hyacinths, tulips and daffodils, followed by primroses, forget-me-nots, daisies and violets will help to wait until the main summer stars begin to bloom. And in the fall in such a garden it is worth adding asters, chrysanthemums, a few bushes of cereals and bright decorative-leaved cultures.

Flowering walls on hydroponics

Balcony plants can also use different ways to grow not the traditional method - not in soil, but in special substrates, holding nutrient solutions.

Cultivation without soil allows not only to make the process "cleaner", to reduce the real load on the structure of the balcony, but also opens new perspectives in care: because such plants, as a rule, do not require such complex care. On the balcony, hydroponics and tanks with automatic irrigation are used both for conventional plants and to find new ideas in the design of vertical elements.

Few hydroponic "walls" can be used for vertical landscaping on balconies:

  • vertical walls of moss with hanging gardens broken on them;
  • using a bag or hanging soft wall, "canvas" with sewn pockets, in which plants are planted (usually their base is made of waterproof durable fabric - canvas, burlap with complex impregnation);
  • planting plants in plastic pipes with holes;
  • creating a vertical garden in converted "wall" pallets (pallets);
  • planting plants in converted tubs, canisters and barrels with drilled holes for planting.

Hydroponic vertical structures

The most advanced type of flowering walls on balconies are structures that have migrated to balconies from interiors (phytowalls). They are a special narrow structure with an autopoly system and often with supplementary light. The plants are planted in a pure peat or ionic substrate.

The essence of all such walls is the same: the base (construction) that will hold upright the moisture holding substrate with holes or pockets for planting out is selected or remade. This is essentially a balcony version of vertical beds and strawberry gardens. Sometimes as an insulating layer, the space is lined with film.

Any base in which holes with a diameter of 4-5 cm are located at a distance of about 15-20 cm will do. At the bottom of the wall, container, pipe should be provided with a hole for water drainage. Fill the structure the same way as any container - from the drainage layer at the bottom to complete filling of the space with the selected substrate-filler and installation of capillaries, conductors for the water nutrient solution - thin tubes or branches, which will help maintain high water permeability. The addition of hydrogel and loosening impurities is only welcome.

For vertical walls on the balcony use ionic soil, expanded clay, coconut fiber, peat. But the best choice, especially for hot balconies, is still moss. As a filler, it not only provides much more effective moisture retention, but also protects plants from overheating. The main requirements for the filler are a combination of coarse texture with coarse particles, the ability to hold water, resistance to all decomposition and decay, neutral reaction and non-toxicity.

Growing flowering walls on the principle of hydroponic plants can only be achieved by using nutrient solutions for hydroponic cultures. Strictly following the manufacturer's instructions on the concentration and frequency of treatment, solutions for hydroponics are applied less frequently than watering and feeding conventional crops.

For creating flowering walls on the balcony by the method of hydroponics you can use both annual and perennial plants. The main thing is that the selected species should be densely bushy, capable of sprawling, create a continuous coverage or develop in the form of compact, but curly bushes. In such walls planted perennials and anemones, marigolds, pansies, verbena, alissum, begonias, gamolepis, carnations, godetia, ivy, lobelia, balsam, armeria and all kinds of annual ampelous plants.
