How To Properly Rejuvenate And Propagate Bastard Onions?

, Admin

The butterbur or tartaricum belongs to the group of perennial herbaceous plants. Courgette is characterized by high frost-resistance, preserving undamaged leaves and feathers when air temperature drops to -10°C. From early spring to late autumn it forms a large number of green feathers, which quickly recover after cutting. Among the early vegetable crops, butternut takes the leading place. How to multiply and rejuvenate buttercups, we will tell in this article.

Bathoon - features of growing on the plot

Unlike onions, Onions do not form a winter bulb and are mainly used as a source of fresh vitamin greens for food. The green leaves of baturon contain sugars, acids, carotene, essential oils, trace elements, and phytoncides. Essential oils and phytoncides have disinfecting properties, destroy bacteria and pathogenic microbes, increase the body's defenses.

In the southern regions bastard onions are grown in the open and closed ground. In spring sowing is carried out when the soil in the upper root zone gets warm to +5 ... +8 °С. Cover seedbeds with lapnik or sawdust (not coniferous), special non-woven materials. Shoots appear 8-10 days old, and the first cutting can be done in early July. If the summer is favorable, harvest young greens in autumn. In the case of sowing seeds in autumn (late August - early September), fresh greens are obtained in early spring, freeing oneself for other urgent spring works.

It is more practical in the middle belt and colder regions to grow buttercups through sprouts for unheated greenhouses and open ground. For its baking use heated greenhouses, window sills in houses and apartments.

In one place onions can grow from 7 to 10 years. It is more practical to start planting new plants of this culture in the 5th year to get tasty vitaminized produce.

Lucas do not form complete bulbs, which is different from onions. A "false bulb" is formed in the ground in the form of an insignificant root thickening, around which a few sprouts are formed. Over time, the underground part grows to the detriment of the above-ground mass.

Buds are grown as a single or perennial plant. If cultivated as a mono-year plant, onions are completely removed by autumn and sown in another place next year.

In perennial cultivation only the above-ground part of onions is removed annually, cutting off the feathers when they reach 25-40 cm in height. Sometimes the number of "feathers" reaches 40 or more. Cap-shaped inflorescences with seeds appear at the same time. Beginning in the 5th year, the yields gradually decrease and the tender and juicy feathers become tougher.

Ways to propagate and rejuvenate batun

Replanting or replanting the batun should be done every time in a new place. Replanting/replanting should be carried out in several ways:

  • Spring;
  • Brush separation. © Emma Cooper

    Sowing onion-bathun with seeds

Seed material can be bought in specialized stores or use seeds obtained independently from mother plants in the second and subsequent years of growth and development of this crop. Especially leave a few bushes onion-bathun for seed formation (mother bushes are not used for cutting green leaves). When preparing seeds independently, sow with seeds of previous years (3-4 years).

In southern regions, with a long warm season, onion-bathun is sown several times with a period of 3-4 weeks. The earliest sowing is in the spring during the first decade of April. It is possible to sow earlier if the soil has warmed up in the upper layer to +10 ... +12°С. The latest autumn sowing in the open ground is carried out at air temperature +3 ... +4°C and the earliest vitaminized greens are obtained next April.

Sow seeds in moist soil in a row method to the depth of 1,0-1,5 cm. Onion sprouts in 6-15 days, depending on the air temperature. The soil should be kept constantly loose, free of weeds and moist. Water in the morning or evening at least once a week, and on dry hot days - every 3-4 days. If the soil dries out (delays with watering), the feathers of baturon grow hard and bitter.

In case of perennial culture, in the first year, young onions go to winter with leaves. When the leaves wither or after the first frost, they are cut off because when they rot, they can become a source of plant infection. In spring, when the leaves are 25 cm or more tall, cut them back to their full height. Younger cuttings of 15-17 cm can also be made.

To speed up the cutting of greens in spring and prolong their cutting in autumn, it is advisable to use light transmitting shelters from February until the steady heat. Onion greens under cover are obtained 2-3 weeks earlier.

    Propagation of onion-bathun sprouts

In the central and more northern regions of Russia to get enough greens from the first year, onion-bathun is grown through sprouts.

The seeds are sown in prepared containers from 1 to 20 March, in harsher areas - from the second decade of April.

    • Sowed at a depth of 3-4 cm in moist soil, cover with light-proof material and place in a warm place with air temperature not below +18 ... +25°C.
    • With the appearance of seedlings containers open, transferred closer to the light, if necessary, additional lighting.
    • When seedlings develop, the temperature first reduce to +14 ° C and maintain at night within +10 ... +12 ° C, raise to +16 ° C. If there is no opportunity to regulate the air temperature, airing without drafts keeps it in the range +14 ... +16 ° C.
    • During the growth and development of seedlings is not allowed drying the soil.

After reaching 55-60 day age, seedlings are planted in the open field or in unheated greenhouses. Seedlings ready for planting have a developed root and 3-4 leaf-perch. In heated greenhouses, buttercups can be grown year-round.

    Brush division multiplication

The best time to divide the bush is from July to September or spring (3rd decade of March to early April). Strong bushes are selected, carefully dug out and divided into planting units of 1 or 2-4 offspring each. Before planting, the roots are shortened by 1/3 and partially cut off the leaves during summer transplanting. Planting is carried out in moist fertilized soil, taped method, placing the young bushes approximately 20-25 cm in a row and 40-45 cm between the rows.

Practical tips on multiplication and care of onion-bathun

It is better to buy seeds in a specialized store. They are already treated against various fungi and other diseases, which contributes to a friendlier germination and better development of plants. Seeds collected by yourself before planting should be disinfected and held in a special solution ("Kornevin", "Baikal", etc.) before planting.

Experienced vegetable gardeners recommend using a bridge planting method, i.e. planting material (offspring) should be placed close to each other. Cover with sawdust or humus soil no higher than 3 cm. Under the required conditions (temperature and humidity) you can get up to 14 kg of green mass from 1 sq. m.

If there is a need to feed Batun, it is better to use preparations "Agricola-O", "Vegeta" or "Effecton" according to the recommendations.
