Beneficial properties of the vegetable crop not to count, But the content of vitamins, trace elements and other substances beneficial to health, beet worthily takes one of the first places in the food series. In the beet used in food all parts of the plant: the root, stem and leaf. Beet and leaves contain:

  • practically all the vitamins of the group "B", "PP", "C" and others, and in the leaves still a lot of vitamin "A".

Beet strengthens the body, improves digestion, removes heavy metals, used as an anti-cancer in the prevention and treatment. It is useful in fresh form and with all methods of heat treatment (boiled, baked, etc.). Cultured species of beets

  • Table beets, with a dark red root of various shapes (round, elongated, cylindrical), are used in the diet.
  • In recent years successfully grew mangold or leaf beet, which forms a large leaf mass and poorly developed root crop. They are also successfully used in private households for feeding livestock and poultry.

In addition to food species and varieties, there are also fodder beets, widely used in the diet of livestock, especially in dairy farms. Beets are a dairy crop and are indispensable for increasing milk yields. Fodder beets can be used as food and are sometimes marketed as table beets. It is distinguished by its small root size, coarse fiber and low taste qualities. Therefore, it is practically not used as a food by humans.

The maturity of beet is divided into three groups: early, medium and late. The duration of the growing season in early varieties from the mass sprouts to harvesting in technical ripeness is 50-75-90 days, medium 90-100 and late 100-130 days.

Table beet varieties

The main objective of each vegetable grower is to obtain high quality products, high yield and aesthetic appearance. Table beets are not deprived of these features. According to its biological and economic peculiarities, the shape of the root crop beet is divided into the following varieties:

  • Egyptian,
  • bordo,
  • Eclips,
  • Herfurd.

Properties of the Egyptian beet

  • The varieties are characterized by a rounded and flat root crop.
  • Early formation of the root crop with good taste.
  • Pulp coloring is monochromatic violet-red or (less frequently) interspersed with light rings. Root crops are suitable for fall and sometimes fall-winter storage
  • used as fresh and processed food.

The varieties of this variety are mainly early - Egyptian flat and Egyptian round, Mushroom flat A437, Unequalled A463, Early wonder, Smuglyanka.

Peculiarities of the Bordeaux beet variety

The variety is characterized by:

  • the pronounced round-oval shape of the root crop,
  • a medium maturity period, which allows to accumulate more sugars in the root crop,
  • the pronounced sweet taste, which is a distinctive feature of Bordeaux varieties,
  • dark red monotone flesh,
  • references to varieties with good storability.

Bicores beets. The varieties recommended for home cultivation are Bordo 337 , single seeded Havskaya , Bravo , one-growing G-1 , Bicores .

Peculiarities of the Eclipse beet

The variety is easily distinguished from others by its root crop with an elongated oval-cylindrical, blunt-tipped, slightly curved shape or in some varieties rounded,

  • grades belong to the group of medium maturity,
  • juicy, tender, unusual red-purple color,
  • characteristic for varieties of short shelf life, so in dacha culture is limited in planting.

Popular varieties for cultivation and canning are Red cylindrical, Slavyanka, Sonata.

Peculiarities of the variety type of beets Erfurd

As a rule, varieties of this group refer to late maturing with a long growing season.

Different from other varieties

  • corns having a conical shape,
  • long, almost without waste, storage in the autumn-winter period,
  • Excellent taste qualities,
  • easily and quickly heat treated, so it is widely used for canning at home.

The varieties of this group still belong to the little distributed. The most famous among gardeners variety Cylindra.

Knowing the characteristics of the varieties will help to purchase appropriate beet varieties for winter storage. Select the earliest, most suitable for use fresh (juice) and after heat treatment for daily diets and winter preparations.

Early table beet varieties

Early beet varieties can be used in bunch and root ripeness. Bunchy early and mid-early produce is selected by thinning. The most suitable varieties are Carillon, Mona, Detroit ruby 3 and other multi-seeded varieties.

From the early table beet varieties we can recommend ultra-early-ripening varieties: Red Ball (improved), Detroit, Holodostoykaya-19, Bordo 237, and from hybrids Pablo- F.

Red Ball and Detroit, sown in early spring, already in 72-75 days form root crops weighing 150-250 g with dark red soft, juicy flesh. Red ball is recommended for children's diet food. The early maturity of Detroit allows you to remove two harvests during the warm season. Ripeness is low, so you need to sow a limited amount.

Holodostoykaya-19 variety of beet is good by quality indicators of root crops. Mid-early variety, giving the harvest from sprouts on day 66-76. Flat-round, with dark red sweet, tender flesh is successfully used in fresh and processed form. It can be used in the spring ration during breakthrough in wispy ripeness during winter and early spring sowing. The variety is characterized by high cold-resistance and good storability.

Simultaneously with the Red Ball variety Bordeaux 237 can be sown in addition. These two varieties are similar in their qualities, but Bordeaux 237 longer growing season. Roots reach technical ripeness later in 90-110 days. It is characterized by heat resistance, yield and storability. The whole summer and autumn-winter period the family will be sufficiently supplied with the necessary dietary product. Bordeaux 237 has one drawback. Root crops quickly overgrow and become tougher. Therefore, it is better to sow them 2-3 weeks later than early varieties and grow them in dense plantings. The early variety Egyptian flat is characterized by good storability. It takes 95-115 days from the mass sprouting to the technical ripeness of root crops. It forms root crops with weight 250-400 gr.

Early varieties may be grown in all regions of Russia after frost-free period and soil temperature in the root layer of not less than +10 ºС.

For the Urals and Siberia Holodostoykaya-19, flat Sibirskaya, flat Egyptian from early varieties are more suitable, flat Gribovskaya A473, flat Polar K249, Wintering A474, Incomparable A463, hybrids Bonel 9805290.

Average table beet varieties

The vegetation period of medium-ripening varieties covers the period from sprouts to technical ripeness of root crops for 90-100 days. The most common in dacha farming are the Detroit17> and Bona17> varieties forming roundish root crops weighing 220-300 grams with smooth skin and having rich red color. Varieties are highly resistant to shoots and excellent storability. Differs from the early varieties of dense flesh, which allows them to use for long term storage and processing. Detroit is suitable for pickling.

A new medium varieties can be recommended for home cultivation sort Mulatka , which features a gentle juicy flesh not losing color with heat treatment. Dark burgundy fruits weighing 200-350 g are stored well in winter. The Crimson Ball and Larka have good storability. It is stated that Larka has the property to withdraw radionuclides from the body.

From the medium-maturing varieties in the southern and middle regions, in the Urals and Siberia form good yields Bravo, Mulatka, Tsilindra, Pronto, Pablo, Lavyanka.

Late table beet varieties

The Tsilindra variety is grown everywhere in warm regions. The variety is characterized by elongated cylindrical root crops up to 10-18 cm long and weighing up to 180-300 g. The variety contains high amounts of sugars and does not lose its taste when cooked. The flesh is juicy, a pleasant dark red color. High-yielding variety (up to 8-10 kg per m² area). Resistant to diseases. Characterized by a good storability.

From the sturdy varieties can be recommended for home cultivation variety Renova beets, which is stored almost without waste 6-7 months. The root crop is cylindrical in shape, the flesh is pink, juicy, dense. In long-term storage does not lose its taste qualities. It forms up to 9 kg of root crops from 1 m². The varieties with cylindrical shape of the root crops are Andromeda , Ataman , Torpeda , Tenderness , Rival are not inferior to Cilindra and Renova Beet in taste. They are characterized by high taste qualities, good storability and yield. They are resistant to variable weather conditions. The late varieties are Bicores, Egyptian flat , One-growing G-1, which require 100 and more days to form root crops

Beware! Breeders have established that in Siberian conditions, varieties with flat root crops are stored worse than those with round and cylindrical.

For winter sowing we can recommend the variety Podzimnaya A-474. This is a non-stemmed variety, and forms a super-early harvest when sown under winter conditions.
