10 Mistakes Of Beginner Aquarists

When I got an aquarium, practically everyone who saw fish in my house asked the same question: "Good for calming the nerves?" But, alas, at first the aquarium was a source of constant stress for me. I wasn't watching the peacefully swimming fish because I was constantly breaking up their fights. Could not rest near the aquarium, because it exuded an unpleasant odor. Constantly changed its muddy water, and treated sick fish. After studying specialized forums, I realized that I was following in the footsteps of my predecessors and making the standard mistakes. What are the difficulties faced by beginners aquarists and how to avoid them, tell me in your article.

1. Buying a small aquarium "on the test"

Aquariums are expensive and take up much space in the room. For these reasons, as well as guided by the notion that the smaller containers are easier to care for, novice aquarists buy a small volume of containers: 10-20 liters, or even less.

In fact, care for such an aquarium is much harder. After all, the smaller the volume of water, the more difficult it will be to establish a natural balance, and the more precarious this balance will be later. The products of life also accumulate in these aquariums faster and require cleaning.

In addition, you are very quickly "grow" out of this aquarium. That is, you probably want to buy more and more new aquatic inhabitants that will not fit into a small aquarium. Over time, there will be a question of selling it and buy a little more capacity, and then a little more ... So think about it, is not better to buy an aquarium no small size? After all, in the case of loss of interest will be easy to sell it.

2. Buying fish without regard to compatibility

Coming to the bird market, you will find that it is not easy to make a choice - all the fish are so bright and beautiful! Most novice aquarists sin by choosing fish based on external attractiveness, without regard to their features, including the type of temperament. Moreover, they have an incredible coloring and pattern on the scales of almost all the colors of the rainbow. Naturally, these fish are very popular. Knowledgeable people for the content of these fish often plant separate aquariums, called "cichlidnikami. But inexperienced aquarists can ineptly combine them with representatives of other families, resulting in the aquarium turns into a battlefield.

Widely known representatives of the cichlids - triangular scalarias - are not as temperamental and in principle can be compatible with other types of fish. But during the mating season, and especially when the female has laid eggs, these fish will hold the whole aquarium in fear.

And there are such melancholic fish that will suffer even from neighborhood with relatively calm scalarians. In my case, settle together with goldfish scalarias was a big mistake, as a result of which the latter were under constant stress. Before you buy another beautiful fish, ask the seller about her character, habits, and compatibility with those you already have the inhabitants of the aquarium.

3. Overpopulation of the aquarium

The novice aquarist with great zeal begins to populate the new glass house. After seeing the rich variety of fish offered by salesmen, it can be very difficult to stop to avoid buying every single one his eye falls on.

Even if you decide to keep the aquarium fish only one species, it does not guarantee that you will be able to stop in time. Goldfish alone, there are so many colors and shapes that the eyes run wild!

Often the problem of overpopulation is also due to the fact that we determine how many fish will "fit" in the aquarium, literally by eye. There are prescribed number of liters per individual, which varies depending on the size and type of fish. And before we go to the pet store, it is better to estimate in advance how many and what kind of fish can settle in available to you the volume of the aquarium.

Disregard these figures can not, because overpopulation will seriously complicate the care of the aquarium. The water will quickly become contaminated, the fish will be more likely to arrange fights and is under stress, will begin diseases and epizootics. As a result, the weakest fish will die, and the aquarium will finally be left with the number of inhabitants that will be optimal for this volume. But is not the price high?

4. Buying fish at the same time as the aquarium

The aquarium is certainly an interior decoration, but you should not forget that in front of you is not a picture, but a living system. And even when the aquarium does not have fish, but the water is already poured, it already begins an invisible life, through which the water will be suitable for plants, fish and other aquatic inhabitants.

About how to properly launch an aquarium, we will talk in a separate article. For now, I just want to warn you against buying fish at the same time as the aquarium. In order to establish a new glass house balance, it will take at least a week. And after that, you can safely go to the pet store.

Many novice aquarists think that the fish just need water, and therefore - they calmly wait in shipping containers while you fill the soil, plant and fill the aquarium with fresh water, which they "certainly like.

But first of all, release the purchased fish in the aquarium as soon as possible, because in the containers there is no aeration, which means a large lack of oxygen. And secondly, fresh water in many ways will not like the fish, and they will experience severe stress, and even die.

5. Buying sick fish

At first glance this advice seems trivial, but things are not so simple. A sick fish is not always one that is swimming on its side or belly up. To be able to visually distinguish signs of disease, it is necessary to study information about what looks like the manifestation of the main diseases of aquarium fish.

Poorly, not all sellers of fish are conscientious, and I often met on sale of fry infected with ichthyophthyriosis. This is a very dangerous infectious disease of fish, which manifests itself in the fact that the body of fish formed small white balls in the form of manna grains.

Inexperienced aquarist may well take these grains for the features of the breed. Letting the fish sick with ichthyophthyriosis in the aquarium, you will probably very soon see that the reservoir had an epizootic. But the treatment of this disease for a novice is not easy, and in addition will require some financial costs.

6. A complete water change and boiling stones

Muddy bad smelling water throws the inexperienced aquarist in panic. There is a natural tendency to change the water and rinse the stones as thoroughly as possible.

Now I already seem funny memories of how, in the early days of fascination with the aquarium, I ran with buckets of water and boiled soil. From him around the house was a "unique aroma" of boiled fish products. But, alas, such mistakes I made not one, and manipulations such I learned from a friend, which too, at one time someone advised so.

Later I learned that doing such things not only hard, but also bad for all the inhabitants of the aquarium. Once the biological equilibrium in the water is established, a water change once a week only drains 25% of the available liquid. Shoveling and rinsing the soil is not necessary, because there are specialized "vacuum cleaners" siphons that help eliminate the accumulated excrement.

And if this water in the aquarium is still turbid and smells bad, then you should look for the cause. A complete water change is a return to the very beginning of the starting process of the aquarium, which only temporarily solves the problem and is unnecessary stress for the fish.

7. Poor quality fish food

The fact that fish are fed dry food, even a child knows. But how to choose the most balanced food suitable for a particular species? Sometimes you can find dried daphnia and cyclops on sale. The cost of such food is relatively cheap, but still feed the fish only these sea creatures is not useful.

It is best not to save on the health of your pets and buy a balanced professional or semi-professional food. They are not so cheap, but will ensure rapid growth, well-being and bright coloring of aquarium fish.

Live food is very happy fish, and they are enthusiastic catch up with the moving prey. Most often the fish are fed with bloodworms or Tubifex. But sometimes with live food in the aquarium carried the infection, so here, too, should be careful. An aquarium without a lid

In most cases, lids for aquariums are an extra option at a separate cost. Wanting to save money, some inexperienced aquarists decide to purchase an aquarium without a cover. In this case, the aquarium is placed in a well-lit place or hang over it domestic daylight.

I did similarly. And everything would be fine, but the aquarium without a cover caused such problems as jumping out of water fish. It happened for a variety of reasons. But most often this was affected by gourami fish, which periodically stick out their spouts out of the water to take a sip of air. Sometimes I had to collect fish from the floor, even at night. And once a snail crawled out of the aquarium and laid eggs on the shelf. Therefore, it is still much better that the aquarium is closed.

9. Storing books and things that suffer from moisture under the aquarium

Often aquariums are sold complete with a nightstand, which is supposed to hold the inventory for taking care of the fish. But in such a package aquariums are not always purchased. Most often glass containers are blended into the existing furniture. So I did, and arranged the aquarium in a niche furniture wall.

While I knew how heavy it becomes completely filled with an aquarium, we prudently reinforced the shelf in the middle. But after a few months, something went wrong, and the aquarium leaked at the seam. When I came home from work in the evening, I found that the water had greatly diminished, and stored in the bottom nightstand books seriously damaged. Since then, I have only kept things under the aquarium that would not be affected by the humidity.

My aquarium was specifically in the bedroom, since in those days I lived in the same room of my parents' house. But when you have a choice, it is better to find an aquarium more appropriate place.

The main problem - the noise from the compressor. Modern aerators are much quieter than older models, but they still make noise. Sometimes the compressor so disturbed my sleep that I had to turn it off at night. However, by morning in such cases, all the fish rose to the surface, suffering from lack of oxygen. And if the aquarium is out of balance, the bedroom will also smell bad.

And yet there are adherents of installation of aquariums in the bedroom, as a means of relaxation and interior decoration, so here the choice is, of course, up to you.
